| HISTORY
OF THE T-SHIRT |
First brought to America’s attention in WWI when American
soldiers noticed European soldiers wearing a lightweight undershirt
to beat the heat of European summers; the t-shirt quickly caught
on. by WWII it was standard issue for both the Navy and the Army.
In Hollywood, megastars like John Wayne, Marlon Brando, and James
Dean give birth to the t-shirt as a symbol of tough guys and rebellious
youth.
In the 60’s tye dye and basic screen-printing begin to give
the t-shirt a voice. Advances in printing and dying allow for
more variety.
Variations in style increase the popularity of the t-shirt. Inexpensive,
and comfortable, you could make any statement you cared to print.
The t-shirt really comes into its own in the late 60’s and
the 70’s. Rock bands began to realize that they could make
significant extra cash by selling their names on them.
Bands like the Ramones sport them like uniforms. Soon sports teams
catch on and the t-shirt becomes hot merchandise. The 80’s
and 90’s see an increase of quality and availability.
They become a vehicle of promotion of everything from the local
pizza joint to your favorite tv show.
Today different styles, and imprinting techniques continue to
be developed and the t-shirt’s power is far from played
out. The t-shirt is a great product. It is comfortable, casual,
and always in style. It has the power to cross all social, economical,
and human boundaries.
As long as man has a voice…
It always will… |
